Credit repair is not credit counseling
This page is educational. It is not legal advice. Accurate, current, verifiable information cannot legally be removed from a credit report.
plant money habits is a private credit-repair company founded by Yordan Marin in 2019. It is not a nonprofit credit counselor. It is not Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. It is not the CFPB or the FTC. We work with people in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Florida, and Texas. Independent reviews: Trustpilot.
1 big thing. Credit repair is the FEDERAL Fair Credit Reporting Act dispute path for incomplete or inaccurate file lines. A nationwide bureau generally has 30 days to investigate under 15 U.S.C. § 1681i. Credit counseling is budget and debt-management help, usually from a nonprofit. The CFPB keeps them in separate boxes. A counselor cannot erase your debts or promise a score jump. Accurate, current, verifiable items stay for the time the law allows. Mixing the two jobs is how people pay for a debt plan when the real problem is a wrong line.
Why it matters. People type “credit repair vs credit counseling” after a collection call and get sold one product as if it were the other. The CFPB keeps them in separate boxes. Mixing them is how you pay for a debt plan when the real problem is a wrong line, or you dispute a debt you still owe.
The bottom line. Repair asks whether a file line is incomplete, inaccurate, or unverifiable. Counseling asks whether you can pay what you owe, and whether a debt management plan would help. You can need one, both, or neither.
Between the lines. A debt management plan is not credit repair. Debt settlement is not counseling. The CFPB says counselors never advise you to stop paying your debt. Settlement companies often do. Those are three different clocks.

Two jobs, two boxes
Federal · FCRA + CROA
Credit repair
Disputes incomplete or inaccurate information with the bureaus and furnishers. The usual investigation window is 30 days under 15 U.S.C. § 1681i. You can do this yourself, for free. A credit-repair company is a for-profit helper under the Credit Repair Organizations Act. Accurate, current, verifiable items stay.
Budget · often nonprofit
Credit counseling
Advises on money and debts, helps with a budget, and may set up a debt management plan. The CFPB says organizations are usually nonprofits and an initial session typically lasts an hour. They cannot erase your debts. They work to lower the monthly payment, not to wipe the file line.
FEDERAL. credit repair is a file job. The CFPB’s May 15, 2024 comparison says credit-repair companies typically work by noting negative items and sending disputes. The reporting company then has an obligation to contact the creditor. If the information is incomplete, inaccurate, or cannot be verified, it can come off. If it is accurate and timely, the CFPB and the FTC both say it stays for the appointed timeline, often seven years for many negatives. plant money habits disputes incomplete or inaccurate information. We do not promise a score change, and we do not sell a wipe of accurate items.
FEDERAL. you can dispute yourself. The CFPB’s scam vs counselor page (last reviewed November 7, 2023) says disputing errors is a free legal right under the FCRA. You do not have to pay anyone to mail a dispute. Walkthrough: How a credit dispute works.
FEDERAL. CROA clocks sit next to the dispute clock. A credit-repair contract has a 3-business-day cancel under 15 U.S.C. § 1679e. That is not how long a bureau investigation takes. See How long credit repair takes.
What counseling actually does
FEDERAL. budget first, then maybe a plan. The CFPB’s What is credit counseling? (last reviewed August 2, 2023) says counselors can advise on money and debts, help you develop a budget, help you get a copy of your credit reports, offer free workshops, and organize a debt management plan. Avoid a shop that pushes a plan as the only option before it spends time on your situation.
FEDERAL. a debt management plan is a repayment path. You make one payment to the counseling organization. It pays your creditors. The CFPB says counselors do not always cut the amount you owe. They may lengthen the term or lower the interest rate. They cannot erase the debts. The FTC’s How To Get Out of Debt says a successful plan can take 48 months or more, and you might have to agree not to take new credit until it is finished.
FEDERAL. confirm the creditors yourself. Both the CFPB and the FTC say: if you choose a plan, call your creditors and confirm they accepted it before you send money to the organization. Nonprofit on the door is not a guarantee the fees are low or the shop is honest.
FEDERAL. bankruptcy counseling is a narrower list. If you are heading toward bankruptcy, the FTC says you must get counseling from a government-approved organization. The list is the Justice Department’s U.S. Trustee Program list under 11 U.S.C. § 111. The FTC also says that list is not an endorsement of any one agency, and many shops on it also sell other services the Trustee Program has not reviewed.
Do not confuse counseling with settlement
The CFPB’s same comparison page (last reviewed May 15, 2024) puts debt settlement in a third box. Settlement companies are typically for-profit. They offer lump-sum deals after you stop paying and save up. The CFPB says a counselor never advises you to stop paying your debt. Settlement shops often do. Stopping payments can add late fees, collection, and lawsuits. Forgiven amounts can also be taxable. That is not credit repair and it is not counseling. FAQ
What is the difference between credit repair and credit counseling?
Credit repair is the FCRA dispute path for incomplete or inaccurate file lines. Credit counseling is budget and debt-management help, usually from a nonprofit. A counselor cannot erase your debts. Accurate items stay.
Should I use credit counseling or credit repair if I have collections and cannot pay them?
If the collection is incomplete or inaccurate, a dispute is the file job. If the debt is yours and the problem is cash flow, counseling and a possible debt management plan are the money job. You can need both. Paying a collection and disputing a wrong line are different moves. See charge-off vs collection.
Can a credit counselor delete items from my credit report?
No. The CFPB says counselors cannot erase your debts. A debt management plan may change how you pay. It does not make an accurate line disappear before the FCRA clock ends.
Can a credit-repair company promise my score will jump?
No. CROA bars untrue claims. The CFPB lists a guaranteed score increase as a scam warning. This page does not promise a score change.
Do I have to pay someone to dispute an error?
No. Disputing incomplete or inaccurate information is a free FCRA right. A company can help you do it. It cannot take that right away, and it cannot legally remove accurate, current, verifiable information.
Is a debt management plan the same as credit repair?
No. A plan is one payment to a counseling organization that then pays creditors. The FTC says a successful plan can take 48 months or more. Repair is a 30-day investigation of a file line, not a multi-year payoff.
